For years the community of Alexandra, River Park and Marlboro areas were challenged with inadequate health facilities in their areas. The JDA in partnership and in consultation with stakeholders in Alexandra and adjacent suburbs co-produced solutions to meet local needs and mitigate challenges in the health sector, by appointing Shomang Construction in March 2017 to complete the refurbishment of Thoko Mngoma Clinic.
The Thoko Mngoma Clinic project involves the refurbishment of the existing Thoko Mngoma clinic in Marlboro. The clinic is one of 4 clinics serving the greater Alexandra area. It will be increased in size, to accommodate additional consulting rooms.
The scope of works includes; demolishing of the roof and some walls, refurbishment of the clinic by upgrading and adding consulting rooms, medical waste areas and underground parking
The Thoko Mngoma clinic construction project will have direct social and economic benefits to the surrounding community of ward 109 and the greater Alexandra at large.
The project created local jobs for the ward 109 community during both the construction and operational phases. Both local labourers and SMMEs benefitted economically by getting employment and training during the construction phase as well as gaining skills and experience which they will utilise in the future to grow their businesses. In the long term, additional staff will be employed on full time basis to service the now much bigger clinic during operational phase.
The project is a financially prudent initiative that will change the face and lives of the community of Alexandra positively.
The total cost of the project is R 18 m
The projects in 2017 achieved a quota of 29.68% for SMME’s for: various trades including the Roof plaster ; Concrete and reinforcement ; amongst other Electrical.
The JDA Acting CEO Christo Botha is confident that in partnership with local communities and stakeholders the JDA has co-produced solutions to meet local needs and mitigate challenges. He is confident that by year end 2017, the pro poor communities of Alexandra and adjacent areas will have efficient and effective health facility delivered for them by the JDA, because the Joburg that works is South Africa that works!.
