The Johannesburg Development Agency on behalf of the City of Johannesburg is implementing the construction of the Social Cluster in Brixton which is now at 42.9% progress anticipated to be completed in July 2019. The Social Cluster’s construction budget is estimated at R130 million with upgrades implemented in phases. The first phase includes constructing of a new multi-purpose sports and recreation center; upgrading existing sports fields and green open space; kids play area, and parking space.
The second phase consists of the creation of a public square, constructing a new library, coffee shop and upgrading of the swimming pool complex.
The project has created employment opportunities for the community and in particular the youth. To date 10 SMMEs and 50 local labourers have been employed and are receiving continuous training and development through the project.
City of Johannesburg, Member of Mayoral Committee for Development Planning, Rueben Masango said the upgrade of the Brixton Social Cluster will significantly improve connectivity and interface between Mayfair, Westbury and Brixton as well as provide amenities that support the live , work and play and improve the life of Brixton and of the surrounding neighbourhoods.
