The JDA on behalf of the City of Johannesburg is upgrading and installing new storm water infrastructure in Newclare. R Mahange and Associates, the appointed Contractor has employed (8) SMME’s and utilizing (8) local labourers for the upgrade of the storm water. The project is expected to be completed on 12 September 2018. The project is currently on construction and monitoring stage.
The main objective of this project is to upgrade bulk storm water infrastructure and installation of new infrastructure which is required to support the envisaged Corridor Developments.
Perth Empire Corridor of Freedom Storm water Master Plan is part of the Perth Empire Corridor.
The scope of the storm water upgrade will include; excavation, preparation of bedding, steel fixing and casting of concrete slab. This process will reduce and treats storm water at its source while also providing multiple community benefits such as:
- Reducing localized flooding
- Improving community aesthetics
- Encouraging more neighborhood socialization
- Improving economic health by increasing property values and providing jobs opportunities for small businesses
- Decreasing the economic and community impacts of flooding and delivering environmental, social, and economic benefits to the community of Newclare, and surrounding neibourhoods.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has completed a Master Plan which forms the basis of the design and implementation of this project. The JDA and JRA have agreed on priority areas that require urgent attention. The first priority area (Phase 1) which is around Bosmont and Westbury is currently under construction.
Partnership with local communities and stakeholders in Newclare cultivate a much more sustainable sense of ownership, civic pride and citizenship and co-produce solutions to meet local needs and benefits for the pro poor communities in Newclare and surrounding suburbs.
The cost for the construction of the storm water infrastructure project is R47,578,637,94 million, said Botes, the JDA CEO.
