Public environment upgrades are currently underway in Mayfair. The project is being implemented by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA).

The Mayfair project is part of the Inner City Development initiative by the City of Johannesburg which aims not only to encourage socio/economic development but also to improve public transport mobility and general public environment upgrade. Mayfair is also one of the areas in the Inner City that have been neglected for a while in terms of public environment upgrade. This project seeks to address some of the key issues relating to the public environment and its benefit to the community.

The overall scope of works entails upgrading of pedestrian walkways, upgrading of existing roads, upgrading of bulk services, upgrading of street lights, upgrading of public facilities and development of a Strategic Urban Management Plan.

The construction of the project will commence in March 2018 and completion will be in June 2019.

Stakeholder consultation process has commenced and majority of the stakeholders have been consulted. Some of the key external stakeholders affected by this project include but not limited to the JRA, City of Johannesburg Development Planning, Pikitup, affected communities (residents and businesses), Regional Office, Ward Councillor, local Emerging contractors and Business Forums.

The JDA Acting CEO Christo Botes said the project will cost a total of R18mil after completion. The upgrade will ensure Mayfair is accessible by road, walking and is safe and socio/economic opportunities are created through this project for the Pro poor in Mayfair.

As a result the residents of Mayfair and neighboring residents will experience, good walking and cycling opportunities, which are a key part of any sustainable transport and planning strategy, and provide an overall improvement of the quality of life.
