The upgrading of Brixton Park by the Johannesburg Development Agency on behalf of the City of Johannesburg will ensure that the communities and neibouring areas of Brixton enjoy outdoor and social life to the fullest. The Brixton social cluster is located within the Empire Perth transport corridor which is anchored by the Phase 1B BRT route linking Soweto to Parktown. Large scale densification is envisioned along this route that will create an increased demand for public and social infrastructure.
The Brixton Social Cluster is part of the City of Johannesburg’s strategy to meet this demand by upgrading the existing Brixton Park with additional sports and recreational facilities. The urban design framework for the project was approved by Council in June 2016, where after JDA was tasked with the implementation of the project.
The upgrade of the Brixton Social Cluster comprises of Work Packages.
The Work Package 1; Phase 1 consists of constructing; New multi-purpose sports and recreation centre, new and upgraded sports fields and combi-courts parking.
The Work Package 2; Phase 2 consists of the creation of a public square, New library, New coffee shop, the upgraded green open space and kids play area upgraded swimming pool
The construction progress is at 1% with site established and excavations begun. The construction cost is estimated at R130m ex VAT. The project has employed seven Local Labourers and two SMME’s to date.
The project will be implemented in phases. Phase 1 is 18 months and phase 2 is 15 months. Completion expected to be between June and August 2019.
Stakeholder consultation took place and Stakeholders affected are the Brixton Community and the Artist impression pictures including City’s entities. Some of the key external stakeholders affected by this project include but not limited to JRA, City of Johannesburg Development Control, Johannesburg Water, City Power, affected communities (residents and businesses), Regional Office, Ward Councillor, local Emerging contractors and Business Forums.
In partnership with stakeholders and in particular local communities we co-producing solutions and meeting local socio/ economic needs and mitigate challenges for the communities in Brixton and surrounding suburbs, said Botes.
