A joint project between the JDA and the National Treasury will bring much-needed work to Alexandra. The industrial hub will target motor dealerships, fitment centres and spares shops, among other industries in the automotive sector.
automotive hubThe development of an automotive hub in Alexandra is expected to attract private sector investment into the townships and create much-needed employment.
The hub is a joint project between the City’s department of economic development and the National Treasury. Construction is expected to begin soon, and at least 200 jobs are expected to be created when building begins.
According to the executive manager for planning and strategy at the Johannesburg Development Agency, Sharon Lewis, the automotive hub will generate economic ladder opportunities that will grow small companies. “The Alex community has high expectations of the project and understands the value of their location,” she explains.
The JDA will oversee the construction of the hub and hand it over to the Johannesburg Property Company after it is completed.
Once finished, the industrial park will consist of motor dealerships, fitment centres, spares shops, glass fitment centres, panel beating shops, automotive electrical workshops, licensing and license plates establishments. It will accommodate up to 20 small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) and will be managed by the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC).
The AIDC focuses primarily on supply chain development, supplier development and skills development and training. It also facilitates investment, both local and foreign, in the sector.
Most of the SMMEs that will occupy the hub will be from Alexandra. It is one of the poorest townships in Johannesburg and has a high unemployment rate.
