{"id":8199,"date":"2016-04-22T05:59:46","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T05:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jda.dev.griam.co.za\/?p=8199"},"modified":"2018-08-28T06:10:53","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T06:10:53","slug":"corridors-of-freedom-get-ready-to-vote-for-first-new-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jda.org.za\/archived\/corridors-of-freedom-get-ready-to-vote-for-first-new-name\/","title":{"rendered":"Corridors of Freedom &#8211; get ready to vote for first new name"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The public will soon have the opportunity to vote for a new name for the Empire-Perth Corridor between central Joburg and Soweto, as the City&#8217;s campaign to name and brand its first emerging Corridor of Freedom enters its penultimate phase.<\/p>\n<p>The Corridors of Freedom is a City of Johannesburg initiative aimed at leading city-wide renewal through the development of some of the city&#8217;s poorest areas.<\/p>\n<p>The project, which was adopted in 2013 and is key to Executive Mayor Parks Tau&#8217;s Growth and Development Strategy 2040, seeks to transform Joburg through public transport improvement, mixed-use development and the establishment of health, education and recreational facilities conveniently placed for residents.<\/p>\n<p>Three Corridors have been identified and the first one, Empire-Perth &#8211; which runs along western parts of the city, including areas such as Parktown, Richmond, Melville, Coronationville and Westbury &#8211; is currently undergoing a naming and branding process.<\/p>\n<p>A key part of the process of giving identity to the Corridors is to allow residents to participate in the activities that will change their city for the better.<\/p>\n<p>Tasked with driving this process, the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) &#8211; a lead agency in conceptualising and implementing the Corridors initiative &#8211; devised a campaign to capture people&#8217;s imaginations while promoting a sense of shared ownership of the Corridors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To give the Empire-Perth Corridor a more inclusive and reflective identity, the process kicked off with a school research project conducted by grade nine learners from schools located in the Corridor.<\/p>\n<p>The process delivered a shortlist of five names &#8211; Ithembalethu, \/\/hapo, Sakhiwo, Empilweni and Vusa &#8211; one of which will ultimately become the official name for the Corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Residents will soon have an opportunity to vote for their preferred name &#8211; watch this space for more information on how to participate!<\/p>\n<p>Find out more about the shortlisted names and rationales behind them<br \/>\nVideo: Capturing the spirit of the Empire-Perth Corridor<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The public will soon have the opportunity to vote for [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":31,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[74],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8199","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-releases-2016"],"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":{"enabledWorkflows":[]},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.jda.org.za\/archived\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8199","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.jda.org.za\/archived\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.jda.org.za\/archived\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.jda.org.za\/archived\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/31"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.jda.org.za\/archived\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=8199"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.jda.org.za\/archived\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8199\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.jda.org.za\/archived\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8199"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.jda.org.za\/archived\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=8199"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.jda.org.za\/archived\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=8199"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
