There is only one more week left to book tickets for Jozi Walks 2019. The Walks take place on 18 and 19 May and the tickets are free.<\/p>\n
There has already been high demand for tickets. Three of the 12 walks (The Braamfontein Cemetery, tour of Alexandra and the Women of Fire tour through Braamfontein and Constitutional Hill) have been sold out with several others expected to follow suit soon.<\/p>\n
Exciting additions to this year\u2019s Jozi Walks are an opportunity to get to know two distinct parts of Soweto; Noordgesig and Dube.<\/p>\n
Writer, Cheche Selepe will take guests around to the homes of apartheid veterans, Andrew Mlangeni and that of jazz legend Thandi Klaassen, amongst others. During Apartheid Dube was one of the first areas that allowed black people to design their own homes.<\/p>\n
Multiple efforts by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) to improve Noordgesig will be visible in the area, as well as areas of historical significance. Noordgesig, commonly known as \u2018Bulte\u2019 was one of the older \u2018coloured\u2019 townships, having been built in the 1930s and housed people classified as Class D coloureds \u2013 those who were \u2018near native\u2019 or families of \u2018mixed races\u2019 .<\/p>\n
Acting executive manager for Marketing and Communication at the JDA, Susan Monyai says, \u201cWe are proud to promote these walks; they promote social cohesion and economic growth in addition to giving patrons the health benefits of walking safely in the public realm. We encourage people to book now and not miss out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jozi Walks offers patrons a chance to tour different neighbourhoods of Johannesburg on foot (or by bike) led by a champion of the area. The bookings for Jozi Walks will close as they reach their maximum capacities. With just a few spaces left, guests are encouraged to book as soon as possible. Jozi Walks, an initiative of the Johannesburg Development Agency, is now in its third year of operation and is supported by the Joburg Photo Walkers.<\/p>\n
