The University of Johannesburg's Soweto campus
Work on upgrading the campus, which will cost the institution close to R800-million, will begin in March and will continue for the next 18 to 24 months. According to Manyaka, funding for the construction comes from the Department of Education, the university and the private sector. Part of the land the campus will use for extensions belonged to the City, which agreed to barter it with the university in exchange for an open space used by the campus as its sports field, according to Alan Dinnie, manager in the Johannesburg Property Company. "The land acquired by the City of Johannesburg in exchange will be incorporated into the area's public open space system," Dinnie says. For even more space, the university has applied for permission from the Gauteng department of education to use the land that was previously used by the Soweto College of Education. "These buildings no longer accommodate the Soweto College of Education and are being used as offices at present," explains Dinnie.
The sod-turning ceremony
Its main academic offerings will be economic and financial sciences, education, humanities and management. It will accommodate 5 000 students. In addition, its Centre for Small Business Development was launched in September 2008. The centre focuses on entrepreneurship and is headed by Thami Mazwai. During the sod turning of the project in June 2008, Minister of Education Naledi Pandor urged students not to make transformation at UJ just about changing staff or student profiles, but to see it as a long-term change involving all aspects of university life. "It is my belief that this project as it is currently doing, will link us more to our immediate communities - the ward councillors, the schools, business small or big," Manyaka says. He believes that the development is an exciting project as it will soon be the campus of choice for most students. "Presently, students who want to register at our campus first look at the facilities we have and compare them with what other UJ campuses have. This makes our prospective students choose other campuses [over] ours, but in less than two years, this will be a thing of the past." |
