The inaugural Halala Awards event hosted by the Johannesburg Development Agency
Nominations closed on Friday, 6 March. The Halala team is reviewing each entry and the final adjudication will take place at the end of May. The winners will be announced at a gala evening on 11 June. While no names have been made public just yet, the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), which runs the awards, says: "From innovative investment to strengthened social sustainability, entrepreneurial eateries to self-guided techno tourism, the variety and scale of nominations for the Halala Joburg Awards 2009 reflect the vibrancy and diversity that the Johannesburg inner city lifestyle has to offer." The focus has remained firmly on living in the inner city, with housing development and management projects leading the nominations. The agency says these range from reclaimed decayed tower blocks, managed with innovation and integrity, to urban chic lofts and cottages. "Short stay accommodation is well represented with a number of luxury hotels taking their place in the relaxing and playing Joburg category, with support services - including cellphone-based self guided tours - underlining how original Johannesburgers are when it comes to sharing the full experience of their city." A variety of entertainment, sport and dining venues have been nominated, showing just what is available in the city; museums and galleries are among the nominations, as are music venues "that have been the start or end point of many a grand night out". As champions of sustainability and heritage, the JDA points out that Halala nominations for 2009 have identified projects that have these principles at the root of their development philosophy. This year, the awards will be joined by the Collosseum Award for Heritage, a floating trophy that honours the heritage that forms the frame of Johannesburg's beauty. Once again, social development projects and programmes are well represented, "reflecting the caring heart of a city that is developing a well-balanced approach to the greening and sustaining of [its] heartland." The response to the Stan Nkosi Lifetime Achievement category has been particularly strong, says the JDA, with familiar faces running neck and neck with new names in the inner city landscape. Adjudication is under way. The adjudication panel will shortlist names in each category from the third week of April. The final adjudication will take place in the first half of May, and the Halala Joburg Awards will be handed out at a gala event on 11 June. BackgroundThe Halala Joburg Awards focus on people and projects working for the betterment of the inner city of Johannesburg. According to JDA, they "provide an opportunity to thank and honour those in the inner city who have gone the extra mile - the projects and people that have made their mark on creating a Johannesburg to be proud of". At the launch of the awards in September 2007, Lael Bethelem, the chief executive of the JDA, said the awards would "recognise daring and encourage maximum participation in rebuilding a reclaimed city". They have a number of aims:
