Construction Newsletter No 2: March - April 2014

The construction work of two middle lanes of the existing road began in March 2014 and is expected to be completed by October 2014.

The two middle lanes of the existing road will be constructed to BRT standard. Process is set out below:

SECTION15A: Victoria / Empire Intersection to Fir Street (3.0 km)
3-5% of the work is done, which is mainly on service detection (Identification of services lines like water, electricity etc).

SECTION15B: Fir Street to Louis Road (5.9 km)
3-5% of the work is done, which is mainly on service detection. Identification of services lines like water, electricity etc has been done.

SECTION15C Louis Road to Newick Road
Contractor has completed the demolition of the road median.

SECTION15D Newick Road to Lees Street (km 12.56)
5-8% of construction work has been completed which includes median demolition.

SECTION 15H (Alexandra –Public Environment Upgrade and Great Walk)
This Section focuses on public environment upgrade on the Roosevelt Street in Alexandra and Rautenbach Street in Wynberg.

The anticipated construction start date is April 2014 and the duration is nine months.

The City is in the process of appointing a main contractor for this work.

Tender for construction was advertised on 3 February 2014 in The Citizen and The Star. The tender requirements were of a contractor with a CIDB grading of 7CE or higher. A compulsory tender briefing session was held at the JDA offices, 3 President Street on 10 February 2014 and tender closing date was 4 March 2014 at noon.

Tender evaluation and adjudication process has been concluded. Construction is anticipated to commence in this month of April 2014.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The City of Johannesburg is committed to employ and empower local residents. Thus far 28 local people have been employed on the project.

A Community Liaison Officer has been appointed for Section 15A and has already resumed duties.

WHAT'S NEW

A process is underway to appoint three (3) Community Liaison Officers (CLO) for Section(s) 15B, 15C & 15D. Their appointments will be finalised by mid April 2014.

As the project progresses it is envisaged that more local labour will be required and that the appointed CLO's together with the local councillor and Regional Office will be assisting with the recruitment process of the local labourers.

  • Tender Notice and Invitation to Pre-qualification: Construction of New Rea-Vaya BRT Stations on Sections 8 & 15 Contract No: JDA 038.3.5.01\CN381: Closing date: 22 April 2014 at noon.
  • Request for Proposals for: Architects, Mechanical Engineers Electrical Engineers and Landscape Architect for the design and implementation of the Rea Vaya Phase 1c Watt Interchange Terminal. Closing date: 14 April 2014 at noon.
